How this estimate is calculated
The estimate is built from patio length (ft), patio width (ft) and surface, then priced at national average rates. It reports patio area, base gravel (4 in), bedding sand and pavers, with quantities rounded up so you are never short of material and the standard waste allowance already included where it applies.
Installed cost with a 4-inch compacted base. Add a deeper subbase where the ground is soft.
The dollar range is a national average, so treat it as a starting point rather than a bid. Labor rates, permit fees and material delivery differ by region — the state table below shows how your state compares, and construction cost by state breaks the picture down further.

Cost by surface
Each row prices the same default job shown in the calculator above, changing only the surface. Use it to see what the upgrade or the cheaper option really costs before you commit.
| Surface | Low | High |
|---|---|---|
| Concrete pavers | $2,190 | $4,303 |
| Poured concrete | $1,518 | $2,959 |
| Flagstone | $3,534 | $6,991 |
| Gravel surface | $1,070 | $2,063 |
What the same job costs by state
Every row applies that state's construction cost index to the national range calculated above. The index bundles local labor rates, permit fees and material delivery, so it is a planning figure rather than a bid.

| Ohio | 0.92 | $2,015 | $3,959 |
| Texas | 0.93 | $2,037 | $4,002 |

Frequently asked questions
How deep should a patio base be?
Four inches of compacted crushed stone for a pedestrian patio, plus one inch of bedding sand under pavers. Increase the base to six inches where the soil drains poorly.
How many pavers do I need per square foot?
A standard 4 × 8 inch paver covers about 0.22 square feet, so you need roughly 4.5 pavers per square foot. Large-format pavers and patterns with a lot of cuts need more.
How much does a patio cost?
For a 16 × 14 ft patio over a 4-inch compacted base, concrete pavers run about $2,190 to $4,300 installed. Poured concrete and a gravel surface are the cheapest at $4 to $12 per square foot, and flagstone is the most expensive at $15 to $30.
Does a patio need a permit?
A patio sitting at ground level usually does not. A raised, covered or deck-adjacent patio often does, and anything inside a setback or an easement almost always does. Call the local building department before you dig — it is also where you confirm the location of buried utilities.
Does this cost change from state to state?
Yes. Applying each state's construction cost index to the national range of $2,190 to $4,303, the same job runs from about $2,015 to $3,959 in Ohio (index 0.92) to $3,110 to $6,110 in New York (index 1.42).
What is not included in this estimate?
Installed cost with a 4-inch compacted base. Add a deeper subbase where the ground is soft. The figure is a national planning average for the work described above, not a contractor's quote.
