Estimated cost
$1,500 – $2,800
Typical figure around $2,150.
- System
- Gas tank, 40–50 gal
- Vent and supply
- Reused — same unit type and location
- Installed range
- $1,500 – $2,800
Installed prices including the permit, a drain pan, an expansion tank and disposal of the old unit. Relocating the heater is a separate plumbing job.
Planning estimate only — confirm quantities with your supplier or contractor before ordering.
How this estimate is calculated
The estimate is built from water heater type and existing vent and gas line, then priced at national average rates. It reports system, vent and supply and installed range, with quantities rounded up so you are never short of material and the standard waste allowance already included where it applies.
Installed prices including the permit, a drain pan, an expansion tank and disposal of the old unit. Relocating the heater is a separate plumbing job.
The dollar range is a national average, so treat it as a starting point rather than a bid. Labor rates, permit fees and material delivery differ by region — the state table below shows how your state compares, and construction cost by state breaks the picture down further.

Cost by water heater type
Each row prices the same default job shown in the calculator above, changing only the water heater type. Use it to see what the upgrade or the cheaper option really costs before you commit.
| Water heater type | Low | High |
|---|---|---|
| Electric tank, 40–50 gal | $900 | $1,800 |
| Gas tank, 40–50 gal | $1,500 | $2,800 |
| Tankless, gas | $2,500 | $5,500 |
| Heat pump water heater | $3,000 | $6,000 |
What the same job costs by state
Every row applies that state's construction cost index to the national range calculated above. The index bundles local labor rates, permit fees and material delivery, so it is a planning figure rather than a bid.
| State | Index | Low | High |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ohio | 0.92 | $1,380 | $2,576 |
| Texas | 0.93 | $1,395 | $2,604 |
| North Carolina | 0.94 | $1,410 | $2,632 |
| Georgia | 0.95 | $1,425 | $2,660 |
| Arizona | 1.01 | $1,515 | $2,828 |
| Florida | 1.02 | $1,530 | $2,856 |
| Pennsylvania | 1.03 | $1,545 | $2,884 |

Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to replace a water heater?
An electric tank runs about $900 to $1,800 installed and a gas tank $1,500 to $2,800. Tankless systems cost $2,500 to $5,500 once venting and gas line upgrades are included, and a heat pump water heater $3,000 to $6,000.
Is tankless cheaper than a tank?
No — tankless costs more to install, often twice as much, because it needs a new vent and usually a larger gas line. The savings come from a longer service life and slightly lower running cost, not from the installation price.
Why does the same water heater cost different amounts?
Because the unit is half the invoice. Labour rates, permit fees, whether the vent can be reused and whether the old unit sits in a basement or a tight closet move the total far more than the equipment does.
What safety items should the price include?
A drain pan with a line to a drain, a temperature and pressure relief valve piped to within six inches of the floor, and a thermal expansion tank on a closed system. A quote that omits these is not complete.
Does this cost change from state to state?
Yes. Applying each state's construction cost index to the national range of $1,500 to $2,800, the same job runs from about $1,380 to $2,576 in Ohio (index 0.92) to $2,130 to $3,976 in New York (index 1.42).
What is not included in this estimate?
Installed prices including the permit, a drain pan, an expansion tank and disposal of the old unit. Relocating the heater is a separate plumbing job. The figure is a national planning average for the work described above, not a contractor's quote.
