How this estimate is calculated
The estimate is built from house perimeter (ft), wall height (ft), doors & windows (sq ft), siding material and storeys, then priced at national average rates. It reports wall area, with 10% waste and squares to order, with quantities rounded up so you are never short of material and the standard waste allowance already included where it applies.
Installed prices including house wrap, trim and labour. Removing and disposing of the old siding adds $1.50–$3.50 per sq ft, and replacing rotten sheathing is quoted separately.
The dollar range is a national average, so treat it as a starting point rather than a bid. Labor rates, permit fees and material delivery differ by region — the state table below shows how your state compares, and construction cost by state breaks the picture down further.

Cost by siding material
Each row prices the same default job shown in the calculator above, changing only the siding material. Use it to see what the upgrade or the cheaper option really costs before you commit.
| Siding material | Low | High |
|---|---|---|
| Vinyl lap siding | $5,544 | $11,088 |
| Fiber cement | $12,474 | $22,176 |
| Engineered wood | $9,009 | $15,246 |
| Cedar or wood lap | $11,088 | $20,790 |
What the same job costs by state
Every row applies that state's construction cost index to the national range calculated above. The index bundles local labor rates, permit fees and material delivery, so it is a planning figure rather than a bid.

Frequently asked questions
How much does new siding cost per square foot?
Vinyl runs $4 to $8 per square foot installed and fiber cement $9 to $16. Engineered wood sits at $6.50 to $11 and cedar at $8 to $15. Removal and disposal of the old siding adds $1.50 to $3.50.
How many squares of siding do I need?
A square covers 100 square feet. Measure the perimeter, multiply by the wall height, deduct the openings, then add 10 percent for waste. A 1,600 sq ft house with 9-foot walls and 180 sq ft of openings works out to roughly 13 squares.
Is fiber cement worth the extra cost over vinyl?
It lasts longer and holds paint far better, so it pays back on a house you intend to keep for decades. On a house being prepared for sale, vinyl delivers the same appearance for half the price.
Does new siding add value to a house?
Siding replacement is consistently one of the higher-return exterior projects, because it changes the whole facade. The return depends on the material matching the neighbourhood — an upscale siding on a modest house recovers less.
Does this cost change from state to state?
Yes. Applying each state's construction cost index to the national range of $5,544 to $11,088, the same job runs from about $5,100 to $10,201 in Ohio (index 0.92) to $7,872 to $15,745 in New York (index 1.42).
What is not included in this estimate?
Installed prices including house wrap, trim and labour. Removing and disposing of the old siding adds $1.50–$3.50 per sq ft, and replacing rotten sheathing is quoted separately. The figure is a national planning average for the work described above, not a contractor's quote.
